May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which provides a good reason to step back and reflect on your own mental health. Unfortunately, if you decide that you would like to seek help and support, knowing how to cope while taking the path to therapy isn’t always easy.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration says there is a shortage of mental health care providers nationally, across many disciplines. A federal study shows that shortage is expected to continue getting worse because of many factors, including the growing population of the US and- specifically- the growing population of older Americans. The gap has been even further challenged because of the rise in mental health problems relating to COVID-19.

Some of the reasons the provider shortage is expected to increase are a reflection of positive healthcare changes as well. For example, behavioral health services are increasingly integrated with primary care, in an effort to reduce the number of people suffering mental health challenges who go undiagnosed or don’t seek help. This means more people in need may be connected with important resources, but it also means a higher demand on that support system.

An added obstacle is not only finding a mental health care provider, but one that you believe understands the unique parts of your identity. The National Association of Black Counselors says Black counselors account for only about 8-9% of the mental health workforce. Only about 5% of psychologists are Hispanic, and about 5.5% of psychologists offer services in Spanish. SAMHSA has highlighted cultural competency as a crucial part of providing services.

And, locally, we are not immune to these concerns. A study of 100 major American cities found Jacksonville to be toward the bottom when it comes to mental health. Weighing factors like self-reporting of mental health status, ratio of available mental health care providers, the suicide rate, and more, the study put Jacksonville at 79 of the 100.

If you are ever in crisis, know that 24-hour hotlines will always be available to answer your call, no matter if there is a national shortage.

Additional Help Coping Mechanisms

Additionally, the increase in telehealth has led to many new ways to use technology to benefit your mental health. Companies like BetterHelp offer the opportunity to connect with a therapist online, whenever you need help, for a flat fee.

While waiting to meet with your mental health professional, consider keeping a log of your mental health challenges, symptoms, and other concerns. This will help relieve the pressure for you to remember what you want to talk about in your appointment, which could be days- or even weeks- in the future. Also think about whether you are comfortable sharing your experiences with a loved one. While a friend or family member can’t give you the professional support a counselor or therapist can, they can provide empathy and help with things you may need while you address your mental health. Also, if possible, consider taking a day or two off work if you need a break. A “mental health day” where you just take time to rest or do something you enjoy can be an important way to help yourself reset.
